Open source software company Red Hat and long running analytics firm SAS have extended their partnership to create “best-in-class hybrid cloud analytics”.

Today SAS announced it will deliver its analytics tools on Red Hat OpenShift, the company’s enterprise Kubernetes platform.

Earlier this year Red Hat released it latest iteration of the platform, OpenShift 4, and announced integration with public clouds starting with Microsoft Azure. Red Hat says it is adapting its solutions, which also include enterprise versions of Linux and automation tools to run in open hybrid cloud environments.

The idea is to allow customers to run open source technologies where they need to and, in the case of Kubernetes containers that can include data centres, public and private clouds, as well as edge locations.

Red Hat and SAS say their container platform approach will help scale and manage analytics workloads, leaving enterprise customers more time to focus on developing and operationalising analytics applications.

So far SAS has confirmed its Viya platform will run on OpenShift.

“The collaboration between SAS and Red Hat combines market leading analytics with the industry’s most comprehensive enterprise Kubernetes platform in Red Hat OpenShift, helping to accelerate customer adoption of analytics across the hybrid cloud,” said Red Hat President and CEO Jim Whitehurst.

SAS CEO Jim Goodnight said, “Combining the flexibility and scalability of SAS’ No. 1 AI and advanced analytics platform with the portability of Red Hat OpenShift, the most secure implementation of Kubernetes on the market, moves digital transformation from drawing board to finishing the last mile,”

The announcement was made at the 6th annual All Things Open Conference in Raleigh, NC, where Red Hat is headquartered.

SAS said it is creating an OpenShift Center of Excellence (CoE) with joint engineering to drive the development of distributed analytics workloads in containers, Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift.
